The heart of the Alps

Two hours by car from Zurich Airport

Grand Regina, at the heart of the Alps

Like a Snow Queen’s noble crown, majestic white peaks surround Grindelwald. In the crown‘s midst reigns the Alpine Resort Grand Regina, deservedly taking its name from the 2000 year old Latin word for queen.

Grindelwald is situated in the center of the Alps, between Geneva, Milan and Zurich. Geographically, the Alps form the core of Europe. One could say that the Grand Regina is located in the very heart of the Old Continent.

It is truly amazing that this area, nestled between three world famous cities, has remained so authentic. Modest, quiet, serene. A wonderful contradiction, from which this mountain village takes full advantage. Thanks to its proximity to several urban hubs, Grindelwald is easily accessible and thus the ideal starting point for weekend-, business- or shopping trips and day tours.

  • Milano

    Milano
Italy’s economic and financial metropolis on the southern slope of the Alps can be reached within four hours by train or car. Milan, former capital of the Western Roman Empire and one of the early capitals of industrialization, is rightly regarded as the most important international fashion and cultural city : Milan Fashion Week, La Scala, the Duomo di Milano, A.C. Milan, countless galleries and northern Italian cuisine tempt visitors the year round.
  • Geneva

    Geneva
Bordering France, the Swiss city of Geneva is the city of diplomats. Home of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and refuge to Voltaire, Geneva is located on beautiful Lake Geneva. The most international of all Swiss cities, Geneva is also the home of the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) and of the second United Nations Headquarters, making it the global «Capital of Peace». Industry has also found a home here. Patek Philippe, Chopard and Piaget, among other world renown watchmaking companies, have carried the label «made in Geneva» out into the world and are a standard for Swiss reliability.
  • Zurich

    Zurich
If you arrive by airplane, your path will most likely take you via Zurich, Switzerland’s financial capital located on the lake with the same name. In addition to Switzerland’s most important airport, Zurich is home to the country’s financial center, and along with the University of Zurich, boasts the world famous Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH).
There is no shortage of famous names in Zurich’s history: the religious reformer Huldrich Zwingli, the chocolatiers of Lindt & Sprüngli, the mechanical engineer Escher Wyss all called Zurich home. The metropolitan region with nearly two million inhabitants offers exciting culture, unique shopping and international flair - Zurich is worth a visit anytime.

  • Mountain Hiking

    Mountain Hiking
There is nothing more refreshing when hiking over the hill tops than taking a short break at a mountain stream to enjoy a long drink of cold, crystal clear, mountain spring water. Clean and healthy – served by Mother Nature herself.
  • Cultural Landscape

    Cultural Landscape
Whether romantic, spectacular or threatening, Grindelwald’s cultural landscape has inspired more than painters, writers and filmmakers. For centuries, the combination of pristine, alpine meadows, charming wooden buildings built out of hand-hewn spruce trees and the imprint of the mountain farming have created anonymous art-works out of this alpine environment. This cultural landscape is the backbone of indigenous alpine farming, practiced since centuries in the Bernese Oberland.
  • Highlights

    Highlights
Hardly any other Alpine vacation destination offers so many diverse tourist attractions in such a small area. The imposing Reichenbach Falls, the romantically wild Giessbach Falls, the thrill of riding the historical steam railway up the Brienz Rothorn, the Belle-Epoque steam paddle-boats plying Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, the historical Swiss buildings represented in the Ballenberg Open-air museum, an unforgettable tour over the Alpine passes - it is an endless list. What are you waiting for?
Skiparadies «Jungfrau Region»

Ski Paradise „Jungfrau Region“

Powder guaranteed!

Since the middle of the 19th century, Grindelwald has been a world famous vacation and excursion destination. Here amidst the eternal snow and ice one finds the practically boundless ski arena of the Jungfrau Region.

The area offers 210 kilometers of groomed slopes, with 45 lifts, reaching up to 2’971 meters above sea level at the top of the Schilthorn. The most spectacular run is the unique Lauberhorn, known from the World Cup, and open for all to enjoy.

The conditions for a winter stay could not be better. Your ski day starts with a mere two minute walk from the Grand Regina to the train station. The Wengernalp Railway carries you directly up to the Kleine Scheidegg - the starting point of the Lauberhorn race. This run of 4 km is the longest and at a speed of more than 160 km / h also the fastest downhill race in the world. The Lauberhorn skiing spectacle draws more than 30,000 people every year to the mountains. And the great thing about the course is that it is open for skiing for everyone when not in competition use.

Because it is variety that truly makes vacation out of travel, many more activities await you off the slope. In addition to cross country ski trails, try the breathtaking 14 km Bussalp Sled Ride, countless serene winter hiking trails, (some of which require snow shoes) leading to quaint alpine huts and mountain restaurants, comfortable train rides to the summits, horse-drawn carriage rides, tandem paragliding flights, bungee jumping, skating and curling rinks. After any of these activities you will be looking forward to relaxing in our 1’800 sq.m. Spa and Wellness Area.

Pioneers and History

Made by Pioneers for Pioneers

Ever since its founding Grindelwald has been distinguished by its pioneering spirit. One of the biggest achievements in alpine engineering remains making the Jungfraujoch accessible. Along with this feat, the construction of tourist infrastructures and hotels in prime locations prove to be lasting accomplishments of Grindelwald’s pioneers. One could say that the true Grindelwald spirit is comprised of a combination of vision and determination.

  • Painters

    Painters
Without a doubt, Albert Anker is one of the best-known and respected Bernese artists to have been continually drawn to Grindelwald. His paintings are both testimony and legacy to his visits. But he wasn’t alone - even William Turner and Goethe succumbed to the impressive and imposing landscape.
Follow in their tracks and let yourself be inspired as well.
  • Film

    Film
The unique panorama of the Eiger has repeatedly served as an impressive backdrop for films, often playing a key role.
Some of the most famous films are "James Bond - Her Majesty's Secret Service", "The Eiger Sanction" and "Star Wars - Revenge of the Sith". More recently "North Face" filmed in 2008 featured the Eiger. Television series, such as "George" were realized here as well.
  • Literature

    Sherlock
Even in Literature, Grindelwald and its surroundings hold a permanent place. Nature’s mighty forces have inspired poets and authors such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His world famous fictional character Sherlock Holmes and his arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty presumably fought to the death at the treacherous Reichenbach Falls.
